What is the real difference between aluminum and steel van shelving?

The two materials behave very differently once they are bolted into a working van.

Aluminum shelving is extruded or formed from lightweight alloy. It is the standard for production upfit lines like Adrian Steel aluminum series, Ranger Design, Masterack aluminum, and Sortimo. The selling points are weight and corrosion resistance. Aluminum will not rust, so a small scratch from a sliding pipe wrench does not start a rust bloom the way it does on painted steel.

Steel shelving is heavier-gauge powder-coated steel, either bolt-together modular units or fully welded custom cabinets. Steel wins on raw impact strength and on price per shelf. A dropped engine block or a 200 pound tool chest sliding into a divider is more survivable on welded steel. The tradeoffs are weight and rust, especially at cut edges, weld points, and anywhere the coating chips.

Does van shelving weight actually matter for my payload?

Yes, more than most owners expect, and this is the single biggest reason aluminum wins for the majority of trades.

Every van has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Your payload is GVWR minus the curb weight of the van. A typical full-size cargo van leaves the factory with somewhere between 3,000 and 4,200 pounds of payload. That number has to cover your shelving, your tools, your inventory, fuel, and you and your passenger.

A heavy welded-steel package can eat 500 to 600 pounds of that allowance before you load a single fitting. On a payload-tight van that is 15 to 20 percent of everything you are legally allowed to carry, gone to the rack itself. Which shelving is right for my specific trade?

The honest answer is trade-by-trade, because the load profile is different for each one.

Plumbers and pipefitters

Heavy, awkward inventory: fittings, copper, PEX coils, a few pipe wrenches that weigh more than your lunch. Payload disappears fast. Go aluminum with deep bins and a few heavy-duty drawers. Reserve one steel or composite section for the genuinely heavy items if you want extra abuse tolerance there.

Electricians and low-voltage

Lighter, high-count inventory: wire spools, breakers, devices, hand tools. This is the ideal aluminum use case. Aluminum, all day. Add small-parts bin walls and a wire-spool holder. The weight savings let you carry more spools legally.

HVAC

Mixed loads, some heavy (compressors, condensers, gauges) and some bulky (filters, ductwork). Aluminum main package with one reinforced shelf rated for compressor weight. Watch your total weight closely because HVAC vans run heavy.

General contractors, remodelers, demolition

Abuse is the rule, not the exception. Tools get thrown in, materials slide, edges get hammered. Steel earns its keep here, especially welded units in the high-wear zones. Accept the weight penalty as the cost of durability.

How long does each type last, and what about rust in Southern California?

Southern California is kinder to steel than the salted Midwest, but it is not rust-proof. Coastal Orange County and San Diego get salt-laden marine air. Inland Empire vans see fewer rust problems but more heat cycling, which loosens bolt-together steel over time and bakes coatings.

Realistic service life:

  • Aluminum shelving: effectively the life of the van and beyond. It commonly gets transferred to the next van. No rust, ever. Bolts and fasteners are the only wear items.
  • Powder-coated steel: 8 to 12+ years if the coating stays intact. Rust starts at chips, drilled holes, and cut edges. Coastal vans show surface rust sooner.
  • Welded custom steel: extremely durable structurally, but the same coating-failure rust risk applies and it is heavier to ever remove or sell.

One underrated aluminum advantage: resale and reuse.
