What Does a Custom Van Conversion Cost in 2026?

May 18, 2026 Vanaholic Team

Honest 2026 pricing for camper van conversions: weekend builds, family camper builds, off-grid adventure builds, and luxury executive conversions. No marketing fluff.

The most common question we get: "What's a van conversion actually going to cost me?"

Here's the unvarnished truth from a shop that's built 350+ vans.

Quick Reference Pricing (2026)

Build TypeStarting CostTypical RangeTop End
Weekend Adventure$15,000$20K-$35K$45,000
Full Camper Conversion$45,000$55K-$90K$130,000
Family Adventure$55,000$65K-$95K$130,000
Off-Grid Expedition$70,000$90K-$140K$180,000
Luxury / Executive$80,000$100K-$160K$200,000
Mobile Business$55,000$75K-$120K$250,000

These are build-out costs - you still need to bring the vehicle (or we'll help you find one).

What Drives the Cost?

1. Electrical System (~$5K-$25K)

The biggest single line item. A 200Ah lithium + 400W solar system with 2000W inverter runs about $6,500 fully installed. Scale that up to 800Ah and 1500W solar with a 3000W Multiplus: $18K-$22K.

2. Insulation + Walls + Floor (~$3K-$8K)

Quality insulation (Thinsulate or Havelock wool), interior plywood, finished walls, and flooring run $3K-$8K depending on van size and material choice.

3. Kitchen (~$4K-$15K)

A basic kitchen with sink, 12V fridge, and propane stove: $4K-$6K. A premium induction setup with integrated drawers, Dometic fridge, and butcher block: $10K-$15K.

4. Bathroom (~$0-$15K)

  • No bathroom (just outdoor shower): $1K-$2K
  • Composting toilet + curtain: $2K-$3K
  • Indoor wet bath with toilet + shower: $8K-$15K

5. Heating / Cooling (~$3K-$8K)

  • Espar diesel heater installed: $2,500-$3,500
  • Maxxfan ventilation: $500-$1,000
  • Mini-split AC for off-grid: $4K-$6K

6. Sleeping (~$1.5K-$5K)

  • Fixed platform bed with storage: $2K-$3K
  • Convertible bed: $3K-$5K
  • Murphy bed lift system: $4K-$6K

7. Cabinets / Built-Ins (~$5K-$20K)

Custom cabinetry is the most labor-intensive part. Quality builds use proper plywood, real edge banding, and soft-close hardware.

8. Labor (~30-50% of total)

At $200/hour, our labor for a typical full conversion runs 350-650 hours. That's $70K-$130K of labor in a $150K build.

Where People Save Money (Smartly)

  • Skip indoor shower → save $8K-$12K (use campground showers + outdoor shower)
  • Composting toilet vs cassette/black tank → save $4K-$6K
  • Used vehicle vs new → save $15K-$30K
  • Buy your own components, we install → save 20-30% on parts markups
  • Phase the build → live with phase 1 for 6 months, then add features

Where People Waste Money

  • Over-spec'd electrical: Most people use 30-50% less power than they think
  • Premium furniture grade hardwood: Beautiful but heavy, and most rigs don't need it
  • Custom couches when a bench works: Standard benches are 1/3 the price
  • Unnecessary smart automation: Most people would rather just flip a switch
  • Skipping insulation to "save money": You'll regret this every winter and summer

What's NOT Included in "Build Cost"

When budgeting, remember:

  • The vehicle itself: $35K-$75K used to new
  • Sales tax + registration: ~10%
  • Insurance increase (typical $200-$400/month for a converted van)
  • Storage if you don't have parking
  • Trip costs (gas, campsites, food)

The "Real" Total Investment

A typical "$80K conversion" customer's real out-the-door cost:

  • Used Sprinter 2500: $45,000
  • Conversion build: $80,000
  • Tax + reg: $13,000
  • Total: $138,000

This is why we strongly recommend a consultation before committing to anything. We'll help you understand your real total, what's worth spending on vs. skipping, and where to phase the project.

Financing Options

We work with:

  • Affirm (soft credit pull, 6-24 month terms, builds under $20K)
  • Synchrony (up to 60 months, builds under $50K)
  • Specialty van loans through partner credit unions (builds over $50K, terms up to 20 years)

Some commercial upfit customers also qualify for Section 179 tax depreciation on the build (consult your CPA).
