Complete Guide to Off-Grid Electrical for Your Camper Van

How to size, design, and install a reliable off-grid lithium electrical system. Components, budget tiers, and the system we install most often.

The single most important system in any van conversion. Get it right and you can disappear for weeks. Get it wrong and you'll be limping back to civilization on day three.

This guide is based on 350+ van builds and our Victron-certified install team.

The 4-Tier Off-Grid System

Tier 1: Weekend Warrior - $3,500 installed

  • 100Ah lithium battery (Battle Born or Epoch)
  • 200W roof solar
  • Victron 100/20 MPPT
  • 1000W pure sine inverter
  • Smart shunt monitoring
  • DC-DC charger from alternator

Powers: lights, vent fan, USB charging, occasional inverter use. 3-4 days off-grid without solar input.

Tier 2: Frequent Adventurer - $7,500 installed

  • 200Ah lithium
  • 400W roof solar
  • Victron 100/30 MPPT
  • 2000W Multiplus inverter/charger
  • DC-DC charger (60A)
  • Smart shunt + Cerbo GX

Powers: everything above + 12V fridge, water pump, occasional induction cooktop. 7-10 days off-grid with solar.

Tier 3: Long-Term Adventure - $14,000 installed

  • 400Ah lithium
  • 800W roof solar
  • Victron 250/60 MPPT
  • 3000W Multiplus
  • DC-DC charger (60A)
  • Cerbo GX with touchscreen
  • AC shore power inlet

Powers: everything above + air conditioning (limited), induction cooking, Starlink. 14+ days off-grid in summer.

Tier 4: Full-Time Off-Grid - $22,000 installed

  • 800Ah lithium
  • 1500W solar (with tilt)
  • Multiple Victron MPPT controllers
  • 5000W inverter/charger
  • Dual DC-DC chargers
  • Backup propane generator option
  • Full Victron VRM monitoring

Powers: full house - AC, induction, hot water, Starlink, full work-from-van setup. Indefinite off-grid.

Why We Use Victron

Battery Chemistry: Why Lithium

Forget AGM. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) has won:

  • 2x usable capacity (100% depth of discharge vs 50% for AGM)
  • 3-5x longer life (3,000-5,000 cycles vs 500-1,000)
  • Half the weight for the same capacity
  • Stable in heat (BMS protects against thermal runaway)
  • Faster charging (accept higher amperage)

The math: a 200Ah lithium = 400Ah of usable AGM. After 5 years, the lithium is still going. The AGM is dead.

Common Mistakes We Fix

1. Under-sized DC-DC charger

A 30A DC-DC charger on a 400Ah lithium will take 13+ hours to fully recharge from the alternator. Use 60A minimum for any battery over 200Ah.

2. Wrong wire gauge

Too-thin wiring causes voltage drop, slow charging, and heat. Use Victron's wire gauge calculator. When in doubt, go up one gauge.

3. No proper fusing

Every battery cable needs an ANL or MEGA fuse within 7 inches of the positive terminal. Skip this and you have a fire hazard.

4. Ground loop / poor grounding

House battery negative must connect to chassis ground at exactly one point with proper gauge. Multiple ground paths = problems.

5. Mixing battery brands or chemistries

Never parallel different brands or different ages of lithium. Inconsistent BMS behavior leads to imbalanced cells.
